Tonight I used up the last of our store-bought fortune cookies for an after-dinner treat. All of them had the standard "apply me to area of your life that would make sense" saying on them except two. Matthew was the lucky one tonight and had two fortunes inside his cookie...Hint #1 that someone was having an off day at the cookie factory. Hint #2: The fortune. What in the world; did they sit around in a 'twiddle your thumbs' meeting on the day these lovely fortunes were put to paper? Monday, March 31, 2008
Looking for luck

Signs, Signs, Everywhere there's signs
I walked down the hall today to find several signs taped up on the doors. One read "famle meding"; that would be "Family Meeting" to those of you who aren't fluent in kindergarten-phonic spelling. He decided we needed to have a meeting about being mean to each other and if you are mean to each other you won't make friends. Hmm...did someone's class have a visitor from the counselor today? Mismatch
Somehow in our huge (HA!) house we have lost Matthew's shoe... OR Matthew has lost his shoe. He retreated to the shower last night with both of them on (I'm assuming) and this morning only one shoe was found at the scene. The other must be a victim of the Silent Reebok Sneak, now known simply as SRS. He's been known to snatch in the past and not only from our family either!
To solve our SRS attack, Matthew hobbled around with one shoe on and one off for several minutes, then the searching came to an end. I was waiting with them for the bus and looked down to find my son with a Reebok on one foot and a brown church shoe on the other foot. "What in the world do you have on your feet, son?!" He smiled and said he couldn't find the other shoe so this was the best solution. I quickly grabbed the other brown shoe so he had two matching feet and off to school he went.
The SRS still hasn't returned the missing shoe.

Collision
A 5 year old daredevil on a bike running into a stationary 'Mom on a bike' has the same feeling of impact as a SUV running into a stopped VW Beetle.
He smashed his hand up under my seat; I flew forward and hit my legs on the front wheels while also sustaining a cut and hit on my calf and we both have sore necks just a short hour after impact. I think I will keep my eye on the daredevil and steer far, far away on the next bike ride.

The Calf vs. the Horse
Now, apply this analogy to my oldest son and wearing a coat. It doesn’t matter to him that it is 32 degrees outside and he as on short sleeves (because it will be 70 by the end of the day.) He will do anything possible to get to school without wearing a coat; he is most definitely his father’s son! But alas young lad, you are the calf. You take off running “coat free” and here comes the big horse and rider (Big Mama) and she catches you, ties your feet to your hands and sends you back in for a coat. I’m not sure what will happen when he gets too big to chase, eventually he won’t be a calf anymore and my horse will be too old to run.

Profiting off others
Actual Gas Consumption
I estimated in my last post about how much gas we would save with the Hybrid Civic in a normal month. Here are the true facts for the month of January. I filled my van up one time the entire month (at the beginning) and the gas light illuminated on the 31st. Amazing! The poor van probably feels like a rejected puppy dog right now, banished to the cold driveway and covered in frost each morning while the Hybrid gets the garage and all the love of warm bodies on each drive.
We actually used 36.5 gallons of gas for the entire month for a cost of $105. We trimmed the fuel budget by approximately $190 in one month. Now, becoming the new family car does have its disadvantages. The Hybrid obtained 1500 miles in one month!

So Green We're Glowing
- It will take you 7 years to recoup the initial higher price by getting just a bit better MPG.
- The battery will only last 70,000 miles and then it will cost $7,000 to replace (followed by a snide "so how's that hybrid sound now?")
- You really won't get any better gas mileage than my family toting Dodge Charger.
- Your wife has a mini-van so keep your Mustang, you don't really need seat belts for everyone. (yea, this was my favorite)
- If you get in a wreck you might as well be dead because the car is so tiny.
- It will take 1 mile to get up to 45 mph.
So, here is a little rebuttal for all the declared and disguised "hybrid haters." It also gave me a little time to improve my brain age score by doing some math.
Prior to 12/31 the van needed gas every 10 days @ 19 gallons per fill up. The Mustang needed gas every 10 days @ 15 gallons per fill up. This equates to 34 gallons of gas every 10 days or 102 gallons of gas per month. $298.86/month
After 12/31 the van has been filled up one time and has been using the same tank of gas for 16 days. The Civic has been filled up once after 2 weeks @ 10.5 gallons. The current usage for both vehicles will be 50 gallons of gas per month. $146.50/ month
So, lets us do some simple math. After the $2100 tax credit the initial higher cost is nill and my gas savings per month was slashed in half. Enjoy your time at the pump.

Springy
As it turns out, there is a natural spring that has been running since anyone can remember and all of these people come to bottle their own water. It must be relatively safe or there would be many sick people in this city! So we looked it up online after talking to the gentleman at the spicket that day and then told the kids about it. Who knew such cool history was all around us?! We emptied a milk jug and told the kids we were going to fill it up with the spring water. We had shown them the article and discussed the history and they were quite excited to see this "natural spring." When we arrived they were less than impressed. Jacob says "In this dumpy place, we are getting water?" Emily commented on the trash and Matthew piped in with one of his brutally honest comments "I am NOT drinking water from a trashy place like this!" Then they walked down the hill and met an older man filling up many jugs and he changed their minds. He told them the spring has run since he was a kid and never slows down (it has been channeled through a pipe and now comes out of a small brick building). He told them it has been tested and it is the cleanest water in Georgia and has NO chemicals in it. The kids instantly changed their minds.
The kids have always liked water but now all we hear at meal time is "I want the best water in Georgia to drink!" I still haven't got past the idea that this "clean" water is surrounded by a dumpy area and pours out of piping that has been in place for at least 50 years. What is growing in that pipe? I haven't even tried the water. I do believe the water has been tested and as the article states it was even bottled at one time but it doesn't help my "ick factor."

Wii-lly sore
Matthew woke up yesterday and tells me... "Mom, I had a crazy dream last night that lasted ALL night and when I woke up my shoulder hurt SOOO bad." I'm thinking he slept on it on weird so I rub it; he immediately flinches and squeals. Then Emily pipes up... "yea, my shoulder hurts too, in the same spot." I was a little confused why two of my children would have the same shoulder pain unless one was having sympathetic pains but then Jacob walks in from waking up... "Mom, my shoulder hurts really bad" AH HA-- Wii Shoulder! They all had a case of Wii-lly sore muscles! It was hard not to laugh.
Ridiculous item for the weekend:
Last week hubby and I went out to eat at a local BBQ establishment. They have great food, awesome wings and as we later learned, extremely high priced soft drinks. We each ordered a Coke and when we received the bill, it cost $4.18 for the two of them. Are you serious?! I can buy four 2-liters of Coke for the same price and all I received there was maybe 20 oz. between two glasses full of ice. We'll go there again, for the great food and awesome wings but for drinks we will be having water. Or maybe I'll smuggle in my own 2-liter and a couple of frosty mugs. That will only cost $1.00.

Holiday Schmoliday
Being sick sucks. It sucks about as bad as trying to wear your favorite pair of jeans when you're bloated nearly 5 lbs and you have to pull your creeping underwear wedgie out of your hiney all day. OK, right now I'll take the wedgie because this sick stuff just sucks.
What do you call a pony with a sore throat?
A little hoarse.

Mad Mixer Love
At first I would tell anyone how much I liked my Kitchenaid mixer if they asked, I even convinced my mom that she needed to ask for one for Christmas a couple of years later. They really are that much better than your standard hand mixer, you really must have one; I told her. But, as with anything you really love, the longer you have it, the more your love grows. I now realize I have Mad Mixer Love. In fact, I just told my husband the other day that its a good thing I found him first or I'd want to marry my mixer. We had a plumber at our house yesterday and he saw the Kitchenaid on the counter and asked if I liked it because his wife was wanting one for Christmas. Well, let me tell you how much I LOVE my Kitchenaid...I can start the mixer on a job and come back and he is still working; he didn't get sidetracked and find something different to do. Nope, he continues at the same speed I set him, no complaining, no whining, just standing there spinning round and round, his commitment never wavering even when something might be a little tough to work through, he keeps working just as hard and allows me to do other things in the kitchen that I need to get done. It's coming up to holiday baking season and I used to stand and knead bread for 20 minutes and overwork the muscles in my hands and arms but now I just have my Kitchenaid do it for me. So, I definitely recommend buying your wife a Kitchenaid, but be careful Mr. Plumber, she might just replace her love for you with Mad Mixer Love.

Chinese Christmas
Matthew, Emily and I took a trip to Target a couple of nights ago and among our purchases was a new star for the top of the Christmas tree. The kids have heard us complaining about all the problems with China's imports lately and our sarcastic comments that they secretly want to poison us. As we are heading for the checkout, Emmy reads the box of the star loudly "Made in CHINA?! Mom, we can't get this, it is made in China! But Mom, you said we aren't buying anything from China anymore." I then tried to explain to her that I made the comment in jest and completely banning Chinese products would be nearly impossible and also asked her to check the other items in the cart, knowing she would find more items made in China. "Made in Tee aa wan." "Oh- Taiwan, OK" (Command Strips) "And, Made in Cam bo lu di ooh whatever" "Cambodia" (jammies for a gift) Well shoot, my theory failed. Then Emily said "Well, China just makes the Christmas stuff." I think I will have to agree with her and then I start thinking about it more. Friday, November 16, 2007
The race is on
The fish died.
He was a good fish; he never complained about being overfed by overzealous children, he accepted his fate of infrequent filter and water changes and seemed content with sharing his life with only a frog. He just swam and ate, until yesterday. We gave him a proper flush last night and then listened to all three children completely break down into tears. Emily was distraught and inconsolable. You are not supposed to flush a fish; that is cruel in the eyes of a child. A dead fish goes in the trash. We told her he was returning to the sea but she said “BUT HE’S DEAD!” Yea, well, ummmm…our trash doesn’t have healing powers, honey.

Around town
While there I hear a nice beat bopping along on the loud speaker and then I actually said out loud "NO, it can't be." In GA, early in November I hear "White Christmas." That is about 8 degrees of messed up.
Today we asked the kids if they would like to draw names and buy gifts for each other. We told them to try and keep it a surprise to make it more fun. The first round ended quickly when Emily decided abruptly that she did not want "That Person" and refused to participate. She broke down and everyone told the surprise of who they had drawn. I explained to the kids that it would be more fun if they kept the surprise but they had "Let the cat out of the bag" and Jacob piped up and responded with "Well, can we put the cats back in the bag?" We all had a good laugh and repeated the name drawing process another two times and I think they may have actually kept it to themselves this time.
We took them to every parents dream location, Toys R Us, to make a list of the things they would like their Secret Santa to consider. While driving I saw a sign at a car wash- "48 HR Rain Guarantee" Let me quickly explain to you the situation here in the area- we are in a severe drought. It has rained 1.9" in the last 42 days and the previous months before that were well below average as well. The lake has dropped 6 feet in elevation since we moved here 6 months ago, Atlanta and many other towns are facing a water shortage and the grass has shriveled up to reveal desert looking sand below. I chuckled when I saw their 48 hr. rain guarantee, it is like buying into a perfectly stable stock market!

Deep Thoughts
"Does Anybody Hear Her" by Casting Crowns
I've heard this song many times on the radio as a drive my countless shuttle missions around town and every time it stops me in mid-thought. Only a few songs can capture my attention for the entire song and really 'speak' to me and this one does. I think our society as a whole brushes off teens, young girls especially, once they have taken a wrong path and rarely offers them the love of a second chance. This is even true with their own parents and family members, who may have contributed to the overall situation in the first place. It breaks my heart to know there are so many children and teens out there in broken homes. It is inevitable that the circle may be impossible to end; a child that grows up without being surrounded by love will never learn how to surround those around them with love when they are grown.
The second part of the video that speaks volumes to me is the "lofty glances from lofty people." Our churches are filled with lost and lonely people and they seek the one place that should be free from judgement but yet it is still one place that holds some of the most judgemental people I have ever met. This makes me incredibly sad. Jesus, the most holy person to walk the Earth lived and walked among with the poor, sick, outcasts, and all of those with bad habits. Religious leaders of that time called him "friend of the sinners", considered a derogatory term but Jesus considered it evidence of his love. If we can love and help those lost and lonely people, despite their scarlet letters, bad habits, financial status, etc. we can show that our love comes from a much more powerful source and can endure anything. If we can love others the way Jesus loves us hopefully we can continue the circle.

Granola Anyone?
Since moving here (where the peeps seem to be more Earth friendly) we have started recycling, bought and use reusable shopping bags, started buying more products that are better for our bodies, and my kids take waste free lunches to school. Before long, items may need a sticker that reads ‘cage free’ or ‘free roam’ to go into my grocery cart. At that time you know I have reached ultimate crunchy status and everyone in my house is groaning when they look for a snack due to the lack of sugar in the food I buy.
Ahoy Ye Matey!

Notes from the weekend
Sunday Night Dinner:
Jacob- Who's There
Emmy- Interrupting Cow
Jacob- Interrupting Co..
Roars of Laughter. This has become the joke of the house and we've heard it no less than 30 times since dinner last night.

Heart Happy
This happened a year ago, but I must share it because it made my heart happy, as I think it would make the heart of most women happy.
